Programme Aim:
This course aims to provide professional level knowledge, skills, attitudes and values appropriate to a teacher aide para-professional role. The group being targeted for entry to this course are mature people with an aspiration to support classroom teachers and facilitate the learning of pre, primary (with options in secondary and tertiary) students.
Entry Criteria:
• A minimum of 18 years of age
• Applicants must undergo a Police Check,
interview and provide their curriculum vitae
• Applicants must hold NCEA Level 1 or equivalent
with a minimum of 10 literacy and 10 numeracy
credits or the equivalent
• International students for whom English is a second
language must have achieved an Academic IELTS
level of 6.0 (average). Students with an IELTS level
of less than 6.5 (average) are required to attend
compulsory weekly ECE ESOL classes for the
duration of the programme (at no extra cost to the
student)
• Good communication skills and a desire to work
with children

Graduate Outcome:
Graduates of this practice-based course will be capable of
planning, implementing, assessing and evaluating a range
of learning support activities for a diverse range of learners.
Graduates will also be capable of effectively assisting a
learner or classroom teacher in an early childhood, primary,
and possibly secondary, tertiary or adult-learner setting, to
learn in an individual, pair or small group context and to
overcome a range of learning barriers and difficulties and to achieve learning or positive behavioural outcomes.
Career Opportunities:
This qualification may lead to employment as a teacher aide,
special education aide, or learning support tutor at a range
of education levels.
