Certificate in Health Care Support (Level 4)About the Programme There are two pathway options in the Certificate in Health Care Support. The general pathway prepares students for undergraduate study in the health sciences and the dental pathway prepares students to become a dental surgery assistant. Successful completion of the Certificate in Health Care Support will provide you the opportunity to apply for enrolment into the Bachelor of Health Science degree at AUT University. Approved – Certificate in Health Care Support (Level 4) has now been approved. Credits: 60 Health Care PathwayThis course aims to develop students’ confidence, essential academic skills and prepares students for tertiary learning – the perfect choice if you don’t meet the entry requirements for AUT's health sciences undergraduate degrees.
Students take the following General Pathway papers: - Introduction to Human Structure and Function - Introduction to Professional Development - Society and Health - Introduction to Human Development. Alongside studying health issues and concepts, these papers will help you develop academic skills such as academic reading and writing, critical thinking and research techniques. Dental Surgery Assisting PathwayStudents who choose the Dental Surgery Assisting pathway develop the skills necessary to be a competent dental assistant in private practice or in school dental clinics. These skills include communication and clinical skills and an understanding of how to run a dental office. Practical experience is gained in the AUT North Shore simulation laboratory and dental clinic and dental clinic placements. Students develop their academic literacy and communication and research skills. All students are introduced to human and dental anatomy and physiology. They also study dental clinic preparation, management, materials and instruments. Students take the following Dental Surgery Assisting Pathway papers: - Introduction to Human Structure and Function - Introduction to Dental Sciences - Dental Surgery Management - Introduction to Oral Health in NZ Career Opportunities This programme prepares students for further study or as a dental surgery assistant in private practice with dentists and hygienists or in school dental clinics with dental therapists. |
Entry Criteria:
English language requirements Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. International students for whom English is a second language must have achieved and Academic IELTS Level of 5.5 (average). Students with an IELTS level of less than 6.5 (average) are eligible to attend optional weekly ESOL classes for the duration of the programme (at no extra cost to the student).
